My second maternity leave has been a lot different than my first. With Lil J, I could take him anywhere and he would sleep anywhere. This time around, I not only have Baby Z to worry about but I have to make sure Lil J stays entertained too.
So where do we go in a city that rains 70% of the time? Hopefully a kid-friendly restaurant or café with a play area - if you can find one.
Last week we had an amazing, stress-free lunch with both kids at Corduroy Restaurant. Nestled in Kitsilano, a trendy Vancouver neighborhood, Corduroy has been open for five years catering to the evening crowd {ie: adults only!} and just recently opened their doors for lunch.
What inspired owners and sisters Rebecca and Allisha to include a play area for the lunch rush? Their own children of course!
When the sisters noticed that there weren't a lot of restaurants in the area that catered to families, they decided to modify Corduroy to make it more kid-friendly during lunch hours. That way, families, friends, or anyone with kids can dine at Corduory with piece of mind that their children will be safe and occupied, and enjoy "lunch" as much as their parents.

The restaurant itself is very cozy and welcoming complete with unique decor that made me feel like I was stepping into a modern-day Wild West era. It was evident that Rebecca and Allisha have put a lot of hard work into making Corduroy what it is today. The menu is boasting with fresh organic comfort food such as dungeness crab salad and prawn cakes to paninis and pizzas. Everything sounded so good, I had a hard time choosing what to have for lunch!
We started our meal off with a mandatory cup of coffee while Lil J enjoyed himself in the play area. The play area was the first thing Lil J noticed and did he ever a blast! It has all the toys and gadgets you can imagine to keep your child{ren} happy while you enjoy your lunch.
I ended up ordering the fettucini with pesto cream sauce and roasted organic chicken, which was by far the best I've ever tasted. The sauce was perfect - creamy, flavourful and not too rich. My husband went for the chicken panini with a side of organic greens and Lil J had grilled cheese and fries, which are cut fresh daily {and super yummy, if I must say}. And by "had", I mean he played the entire time and took the food to go.
If you're in the Vancouver area, Corduroy is definitely the newest lunch hot spot for families. Plan a play date or a family "lunch" out, bring your kids, and have a stressful-free lunch knowing your kids will be occupied and that you'll actually be able to finish your meal. Note that the play area is only open during lunch hours from 11am-3pm.
