My kids have been very fortunate to grow up in a stable environment with all of the essentials at their disposal. Even though they may have ten of their "favourite" toys, shelves filled with hundreds of books and closets spilling with clothes, my husband and I always try to instill a sense of compassion and awareness that we should not take our many riches for granted.
About a month ago, I was speaking with Lil J about the weather, and how fall and winter usually means extremely cold temperatures {I know some of our East Coast friends are laughing at us right now saying, "Cold? They don't know the half of it!"}. I also brought up the one time Lil J gave a homeless man his very last "blue package" {a blue package is Lil J's absolute favourite treat - Welch's fruit snacks} because I had told him the man was hungry. Lil J was three at the time.
Just witnessing Lil J's kind act that was performed without hesitation, and with such compassion and empathy, made me realize that perhaps we could one day give back to the community. I suggested walking around downtown with peanut butter and jelly sandwiches {Lil J's favourite!} to hand out to people in need. Lil J chimed in and declared that he was going to give them Jello hearts.
Jello hearts. Oh my heart.
I think this may be a future project in the works for the kids. I want them to see the world outside ours. A world that isn't ideal but one that is there. One that is right in front of us. I want my kids to know that there's a story behind every human being and, as easy as it is to judge, it only takes two seconds to make a difference.
Tonight all three kids made their very own holiday cards through Kinder Canada's A Joy To Share program. For every card that is made, Kinder Canada will donate $1 on your behalf {up to $25,000!} to the Children's Miracle Network. Hurry over to their Facebook page for frequent updates and remember that Kinder chocolates make fabulous stocking stuffers {hint, hint}!
Disclosure: I’m part of the Kinder® Mom program and I receive special perks as part of my affiliation with this group. The opinions on this blog are my own.
