Founded by fellow Vancouverite Laura Derksen, Arrow and Lace Designs is essentially an extension to her former online children’s shop, Crystal Clear Boutique. Arrow and Lace Designs is a collection of exquisite vintage-style apparel and handmade accessories, which are made with love by Laura herself.
As soon as we opened up our Arrow & Lace package, we were amazed at the quality of the gorgeous fabrics and attention to detail that Laura clearly puts into her work. Lil J scored a handsome, adjustable bow tie, and Baby Z was spoiled with a matching grey Ariella headband and white Harlan hair clip.
We asked Laura about her business, her design style and what kind of advice she would offer her fellow small business owners:
Q: What/who inspired you to start Arrow and Lace Designs?
A: After my daughter, Ariella, was born in May 2010, I started making hair accessories which quickly became popular with my family and friends. Crystal Clear Boutique, an online children's boutique, was created March 2011 so that I could stay at home with my daughter. It became a successful online business that taught me what I know today and, after my son Kenton was born in August 2013, I knew exactly which direction I wanted to take my new business, Arrow & Lace Designs.
Q: We've been following you on Instagram for a while and love your design style. Name three words that best describe your style and why.
A: You're so sweet! I would describe my style as vintage, fresh and always changing. I love vintage French provincial furniture because it's timeless and so detailed. The word fresh is perfect because I love light, bright colours. Target and Home Sense are some of my favourite places to go for affordable pieces that you can change around quickly as the seasons come and go.
Q: Your designs are so intricate and the quality is exceptional. We'd love to know which Arrow and Lace Designs piece is your favourite and the story behind it!
A: It's so hard to choose but my personal favourite would have to be the Harlan Collection. Pearls, rhinestones, satin, organza and lace make this collection extremely detailed and elegant.
Q: If there is one piece of advice you would give to budding entrepreneurs, what would it be?
A: Believe in yourself! The hardest part is starting! Do what you love and you will love what you do!
